Abstract |
This thesis focuses on the use of white light scanning interferometry methods to study
the topology/topography of surfaces of transparent materials that are met in vision
science applications in a non-invasive way. The focus of this study is to measure
the surface profile of different kinds of optical elements and additionally to deduce
quantitative information regarding the surface such as surface roughness for every
element and curvature specifically for lenses. The main objects under study are rigid
contact lenses (CL) of various radii of curvature (RoC) and typical glass lenses of
different focal distances. Additionally, a stylus calibration refererence sample and a
set of polymer films were measured. Concerning one of the most important factors of
a device for measurement and analysis, the spatial resolution of the current device in
terms of surface elevation is in the order of tenths of nanometers. Due to the nature
of the used scanning method, there is no corresponding time resolution, since the
procedures of measurement and analysis are consecutive. The results of relatively flat
surfaces render the device stable, reliable, reproducible and within the manufacturer’s
tolerances whereas for spherical ones there exists an accuracy error in the range of 5
to 20% in RoC estimation.
