Abstract |
Purpose: Although several studies have reported results up to 12 months after performing CXL, a few only studies have reported stiffening effect of the CXL treatment in keratoconus for period longer than 2 years after the procedure. In this case series, we present the long-term results of corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL) in patients with keratoconus.
We present the long-term refractive, topographic, tomographic and endothelial outcomes of CXL in 22 patients (26 eyes) with keratoconus.
Methods: In this prospective, interventional case series, 26 eyes (22 patients; 13 males and 9 females) with progressive keratoconus were enrolled. All patients underwent CXL treatment according to the Dresden protocol. Visual and refractive outcomes were evaluated preoperatively and at 1st (n= 22), 2nd (n=22), 3rd (n=17, 21 eyes), 4th (n=10, 12 eyes) and 5th year (n=7, 8 eyes), postoperatively.
Results: No intraoperative or postoperative complications were observed in any of the patients. Logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (LogMAR) mean uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) and mean corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) improved significantly from 0.87 ± 0.47 and 0.30 ± 0.23 preoperatively to 0.60 ± 0.39 (P = 0.002) and 0.18 ± 0.18 (P= 0.001) at last follow-up. Mean steep keratometry readings reduced significantly from 52.69 ± 6.48 diopters (D) preoperatively to 49.52 ± 4.55 D at last follow-up (P = 0.001). Mean flat keratometry readings reduced significantly from 47.95 ± 4.93 diopters (D) preoperatively to 45.75 ± 3.78 D at last follow-up (P = 0.001).
Conclusions: CXL appears to be effective and safe in halting progression of corneal ectatic disorders over a long-term follow-up period up to 5 years postoperatively.
