Access Point Selection for Improving Throughput Fairness in Wireless LANs |

Abstract |
In current wireless hot-spots, it is common that a station is within the vicinity of more than one access points (APs). Commonly, the selection of the access point is based on the received signal strength of beacon frames transmitted by the available access points. However, this approach results in an unbalanced distribution of station to access points. Stations associate to a subset of access points (APs) leading them to over-loading, thus dierent demands in bandwidth and delay can not be ful―lled. We investigate this problem of access point selection in wireless LANs based on the IEEE 802.11 standard. According to the proposed approach, the selection is based on the packet transmission delay for each access point that a station can associate to, which is related to the throughput that the station can achieve. An important feature of this approach is that it considers the contention-based nature of IEEE 802.11's MAC layer. Furthermore, it can be applied to the 802.11e standard, which can support dierent classes in terms of the minimum contention window. Finally, it can be implemented solely at the wireless stations, where they passively monitor the activity of each access point's channel, without requiring modi―cations to the access points. Experiments show that the proposed approach can achieve signi―cantly higher throughput fairness compared to other approaches, without a signi―cant decrease of the aggregate throughput.
