Abstract |
The aim of the present study was to investigate and develop understanding of the experiences
of fatherhood of substance users, highlighting their distinct subjective perspectives.
For this purpose, the use of the qualitative methodology was chosen and specifically semistructured interviews were conducted with six fathers members of the buprenorphine
substitution unit of OKANA of the Hospital of Special Diseases of Thessaloniki.
Furthermore, thematic analysis procedures were applied in analysing the data. More
specifically, the study focused on how substance abusing fathers interpret the experience of
fatherhood and their paternal role, but also how they believe that substance abuse affects their
relationship with children and their mothers. In addition the study examined how substance
abusing fathers believe to be perceived by their significant others and society at large, and
how this hetero-perception affects their self-perception and their parenting practices. In
addition, the study explored the contribution of fatherhood in modifying the self-image of
substance abusing fathers and in the emergence of new aspects of it. Results indicated that
fatherhood was a very important experience for the participants, as it was the main reason for
them to move away from substances and discover new images of themselves, to develop a
close emotional relationship with their children and to be active and present fathers in their
daily lives. Therefore, their self-perception as fathers was also positive, which was especially
strengthened by the good image that their significant others maintained for them. On the
other hand, they did not seem to be influenced by negative social representations of how
‘inappropriate and inadequate’ substance abusing fathers. Finally, despite acknowledging the
impact of substance abuse on relationships with children and their mothers, participants
focused on the improvement of these relationships, after their entering to addiction treatment,
while their main concern was to protect their children from the role model of substance
abusing father.
