Abstract |
The present PhD thesis concerns the chemical functionalization of transition metal dichalcogenides and nanocarbons, aiming in their exploitation for electrocatalytic applications, charge-transfer phenomena and molecular recognitions systems. The first part of the doctoral thesis includes the design, development and study of new methodologies for the non-covalent and covalent functionalization of graphene, carbon nanohorns, as well as MoS2 and MoSe2 as representative members of the transition metal dichalcogenide family. Particularly, a hybrid material comprising of suitably designed block-copolymer able to interact with graphene and perovskite nanocrystals via multiple van der Waals forces and electrostatically via Coulomb forces, was realized. By taking advantage of the in-situ formed aryl diazonium salts, carbon nanohorns were covalently modified with aryl units. In addition, a new methodology was developed for the covalent modification of the metallic and semiconducting phase of MoS2 with dithiolene units. Also, the photocatalytic acylation with aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes of the semiconducting phase of MoS2 and MoSe2 was studied. The second part of the present thesis deals with the electrocatalytic applications of chemically modified carbon nanotubes and graphene and expands to the performance of functionalized MoS2 in other applications, such as photoinduced charge-transfer phenomena and molecular recognition. In particular, carbon nanotubes were covalently functionalized with terpyridine ligands that were then metallated with Ru and the effect of the stepwise construction was studied as far as the oxygen reduction reaction is concerned. Following, chemically modified graphene analogues, which were functionalized with cobaloxime units as active electrocatalytic center, were comparatively studied in terms of the axial coordination to Co center towards the hydrogen evolution reaction. In parallel, MoS2 was covalently functionalized with a perylene substituent designed to reveal the photoinduced electron-donor capability of MoS2 in an electron donor-acceptor system. Finally, a Hamilton receptor was immobilized on the MoS2 lattice and the molecular recognition ability of barbiturates was proved within a MoS2-based supramolecular system via hydrogen bonding.
