Abstract The purpose of this dissertation is to record the social characteristics, location and behavior of HIV-positive individuals. Moreover, it focused on the emergence of possible variations in social behaviors on the part of seropositive people along with highlighting correlations in socio-demographic characteristics. The objectives of the study also focused on the exploration of the possible existence of fear of social stigmatization and discrimination affecting the behaviour of the people in our sample. The survey took place at the Unit of Infectious Diseases of the University Hospital of Heraklion through questionnaires with closed questions given to people with HIV / AIDS. The questionnaire was so structured as to cover all possible aspects of social life. Its main focal points are: Socio-demographic characteristics and disseminating information to and receiving response from: a) The family environment, b) The friends environment c) The workplace environment The study was cross-sectional and involved a sample of 90 patients, men and women, based on personal interviews. The study took place in March 2011. From the statistical analysis of the data it was derived that most HIV-positive individuals are men (72%) with women reaching up to a total of 28%. The majority of those people are unmarried (42.2%) residing in the prefecture of Chania (37.8%). In our study it was shown that the seropositive individuals primarily inform their family about the state of their health (76.7%) while the person than they choose to confide in is usually their mother (23.5%). The family's reaction to this information is overwhelmingly positive (91.2%). The main reason for the non-disclosure is the fear of any corresponding reaction (68.4%) while very few people with HIV inform their workplace on their health status (7.78%). In conclusion, patients with HIV appear not to be experiencing problems with family or friends when they communicate to them the state of their health. They don‟t seem to indicate any suffering from some sort of psychological or physical pathology resulting from their health condition. However, they reveal that both marital status and the time elapsed since the diagnosis play an important role in the subsequent course of the patient.
