Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the mortality rates in Greece for each Prefecture for years 2001 and 2006. The focus of the analysis was to study the spatio-temporal trends and how they are related to socioeconomic conditions of the population. Various mathematical and spatial analysis methodologies were applied to identify the underlying trends and relationships. Additionally, a new method both in terms of theoretical background and its representation as a model was proposed to identify the data’s nature and determine the optimal method of analysis. Finally, clustering methods were used to identify the commonalities based on gender, age and other socioeconomic conditions of mortality rates by Prefecture. Concluding, the thesis outlined the significance of studying mortality rates at a smaller spatial level. With the application of geo-mathematical methods it was possible to identify patterns at the Prefecture level which should be taken into account by public health officials. It is evident that measures taken to promote health should take into account the local conditions.
