Abstract |
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the indirect improvements that can be made in the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) experiment of our lab, by regulating the temperature fluctuations of its surrounding environment. More specifically, it is concerned with the effects of temperature stabilization on the number of atoms and the position of the atom cloud inside the experiment’s main apparatus, the Magneto-Optical trap (MOT), as well as with the building of the system responsible for the aforementioned stabilization in temperature, which is based on proportional, integral and derivative (PID) control.
The thesis is composed of six chapters. Chapter 1 is a brief introduction about BEC and the need for high thermal stability of the experimental environment. Chapter 2 covers the main experimental techniques and equipment used for the creation of Bose-Einstein condensates in our lab. Chapter 3 deals with the mathematical theory of feedback control systems, which governs the operation of the temperature stabilization system we built. Chapter 4 describes in detail the temperature stabilization system, its function, its tuning and the improvements made on the surrounding temperature of the experiment. Chapter 5 examines the effects of the stabilization system on the two properties of the MOT (atom number and cloud position) and their correlation to the magnitude of the temperature fluctuations. Finally, Chapter 6 discusses the conclusions from the previous two chapters and more specifically the eightfold decrease in temperature fluctuations and the corresponding 19% decrease in the fluctuations in atom number and the 45% decrease in the instability of the atom cloud position
