Abstract |
The physical documentation of an artwork is visually - descriptive visual, but also by using scientific analytical methods from the field of science. In recent decades the physicochemical analytical and diagnostic methods involved more and more in "reading" and decrypt of the material life of an artwork. This paper will attempt a historiographical presentation of material evidence of Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons in the Greek area through physicochemical research and analysis, focusing also on the issue of their contribution to the study of the painting of this group of icons.
The evolution and specialization of research in modern technology provides several more scientific tools and has expanded the fields of application of physicochemical methods in the areas of diagnosis and documentation of art, helping to obtain quick and direct research.
More and more systematic verification of conservation status, the study of technical and construction materials and the safe documentation of authenticity and dating are part of the overall approach and interpretation of a work of art, which is seen as the result of an integrated production process system which involved materials, techniques, spiritual and historical traditions, economic and social environment. Parameters involved together with each one special and unique way, which is not yet repeated and if works are owned by the same artist.
