Abstract |
Introduction: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) who are diagnosed for the first time with some form of cancer between the ages of 15 and 39. They are recognized as a distinct population of oncology patients with special characteristics and treatment needs. Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in AYA women and has serious physical and psychological effects, significantly reducing their quality of life. The percentage of women surviving breast cancer has increased to 85.5% due to improved medical and nursing care. Therefore, there is an increased scientific interest in understanding the long-term complications and in improving the quality of life of patients and survivors of this neoplasm.
Aim: : This research focuses on the special population of adolescent and young adult women with breast cancer and aims to investigate the long-term effects of their treatment and to determine the nursing role in promoting their health and quality of life.
Methods: The present study is a bibliographic review of scientific literature registered in international databases such as Pubmed, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect and platforms of official oncology institutions such as the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Entry criteria for the selection of articles are the English language, the time period between 2016 and 2022 and the relevance of the content to the purpose of the work. The texts were searched using keywords.
Conclusions: Breast cancer has a negative impact on the quality of life of AYAs patients. Nursing care that focuses on addressing the physical and psychological symptoms of AYAs patients, as part of overall care, is important in dealing with this specific group of oncology patients.
