Abstract

Background: People often have multiple chronic diseases, they use a lot of medicines and over the counter medications. A lot of them keep medicines for current and future use in their home, resulting in a waste of healthcare resourses. This study was conducted to identify the extend of medication use and wastage among families in a rural area in Crete. Patients and methods: information on the homestorage of all drugs was collected from households randomly. Results: Information were collected from 40 families, 85 family members (36 men, and 49 women (mean age+sd) 56.5+24.3. They had a total of 557 drugs that they represented 324 different drugs in terms of generic type, with a total cost of 8954 euros. The mean quantity of drugs in number of boxes were 8.5+ 5.8, from them the 4.1+2.4 were used currently and the 2.9+2 were kept for future use. Cardiovascular drugs accounted to 48% of the drugs used currently. Analgesics (24%), and antibiotics (17%), were the majority of home storage kept for future use. Conclusions: medications were stored in large quantities in this rural area and a large percentage was being wasted. A community mobilization via an education of health should be an important component of the global strategy of promotion of the rational use of drugs.
