Abstract |
This paper refers to teaching approaches and teaching methods about learning Greek as a second language (SL). This applies to foreign/repatriated students, immigrants and refugees who have to attend public education in Greece. In order to enhance the multilingualism and the academic success of these students, various European programs are implemented in Greek education. The teaching approach that achieves the above goal is the Content Based Instruction (CBI). From the CBI approach in this research the CLIL (Content Language Integrated Learning) method was applied in the 2nd grade of a Vocational High School in Samos. Three lessons based on the CLIL method were delivered. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of the CLIL approach method (Content and Language Integrated Learning) regarding academic vocabulary teaching (through specific teaching scenarios) on the bilingual vocational high school students’ linguistic development. The sample of the research consists of three bilingual students who were integrated in a mainstream classroom – with native speakers of Greek. The researcher used vocabulary cards for the academic vocabulary explicit teaching and worksheets for implicit teaching. Before instructions took place, the level of the Greek language Knowledge was assessed by using the tests on the website «Gate for the Greek Language». Data analysis showed that by CLIL method there has been an improvement in the bilingual students recalling and use of the academic vocabulary they were taught.
