Abstract Aim of this study is to discover the knowledge, intentions, attitudes and beliefs of the public hospitals doctors concerning one day surgery. In parallel, national and international experience of one day surgery is searched so as to increase knowledge and beliefs about the development and implementation of the ODS practice. One Day Surgery is a common practice worldwide during the last decades with brilliant results. Especially through the last years in private and public health sector, health economists, health policy professionals and politicians have shown severe interest upon the practive of ODS. Nowadays, developed countries conduct a serious percentage of surgical operations under the guidelines of ODS, which is organized and supported as a separate structure of a hospital. Once the literature review was completed the questionnaire of the study was handed out. People of the study were all specialized surgeon-doctors and specialized anesthesiologists working for the public hospitals of Heraklion, Crete prefecture whose specialty provides for ODS. Initially, a pilot study was initiated with about 10 participants and after that the full length study was conducted. The analysis of the questionnaires was conducted with the help of descriptive statistics (frequencies and percentages). Chi-square crosstabs were implemented in order to find out if certain findings were correlated with demographic or professional characteristics of the participants. Data analysis was conducted with the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Certain surgical specialties (general surgeons, orthopedics, gynecologists and urologists) were found to be more positive to the development of ODS and this group of doctors could be the core part of ODS development in Greece.
