Abstract |
A plethora of datasets contain geographic information or can be linked to geographic information.
In this thesis, we show how an exploratory search process, specifically the Preference -enriched
Faceted Search (PFS) process, can be enriched for being appropriate for exploring datasets that
contain GEOgraphic information. In brief, PFS supports user clicks that correspond to either hard
or soft constraints. The first kind corresponds to the actions of the classical faceted search (where
the user can restrict his focus gradually while getting an overview of the information space), while
the latter corresponds to actions that specify preferences that rank accordingly the information
space. In this thesis we extend PFS for advancing the exploration services for datasets that contain
also geographic information. In the extended model, the user can use the map not only for inspecting the current focus, but also for restricting the focus, as well as for expressing preferences.
Subsequently we describe an implementation of the approach by extending the system Hippalus and
a pilot application of the resulting system.
Finally, we apply and evaluate the proposed approach using a synthetic dataset containing information about Hotels in Crete, and we discuss issues related to the scalability of the approach.
To the best of your knowledge, this is the first system that supports exploratory search with preferences over datasets that contain also geographic information.
