Abstract |
Focusing on the Ottoman Empire of the late 19th -early 20th century, this Thesis aims at tracing the ways in which the Greek Orthodox and Muslim women’s Press, as well as women as subjectivities, engaged themselves in processes of interpretation, deliberation, confrontation, and internalization of western ideals, models and patterns of life. This receptive process is examined either at the level of women’s writing and discursive imprint or at the level of other modes of material/physical or symbolic enunciation of the female Subject.
Within the theoretical/methodological framework of the Politics of Location (aka Standpoint Theory) and Situated Knowledges and in the light of feminist poststructuralism, processes of convergence between female and patriarchal discourses and women’s complicity to patriarchy are discussed. In the postcolonial context that emerges from the amalgamation of western and local discourses, I also illustrate the internal conflicts that define women’s discourse and women’s subjectivity and discuss women’s skillful attempts to manipulate western cultural codes or influence western narratives and ideals. Most importantly, I present instances of patriarchal narratives being proficiently employed to become the springboard for the articulation of a discourse that causes ruptures in the private-public bipolar pattern and ultimately reframes women’s social roles and agency in the face of patriarchal norms.
In this context, some other more alternative and less conspicuous loci of female agency and self-definition are brought to light. These loci come to question the narrowly rational and dichotomous interpretations of Space and Knowledge. They open up new perspectives towards the construction of a sense of Self that gradually disentangles itself from heteronomy. They bring women’s agency out of historical obscurity and ultimately open up emancipatory pathways in the course of their shifting from the ‘margins’ towards the center of civil society.
