Abstract

With the dissolution of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Greece was confronted with a complex issue. The dispute arose from the creation of the "Republic of Macedonia" which had the same name as the adjacent region of Greece. Efforts of recognition by the international community and negotiations between Greece and its new northern neighbor are the main theme of this topic. A feature of the negotiations between the two countries is the inability to converge on the objectives pursued, with the result that each conversation ends in a no win situation or agreement. It was only twice that an agreement could be signed. The first agreement was in 1995 which set up a number of issues in order the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia could be recognized by the international community using a temporary name. The final agreement was signed in 2018 which is in great detail in many aspects of the above issue mentioned. With the signing of the final agreement, the issue of the use of the terms "Macedonia" and "Macedonian" was settled. However, product issues were scheduled to be discussed at a later date. At the same time the implementation of the agreement was linked in to the country's entry into the European Union and NATO. Both countries are facing new challenges and attention is required in the implementation of the agreement.
