Abstract The measures to mitigate the pandemic, combined with the fear of parents to attend vaccination appointments at health centers, seemed to affect the overall vaccination coverage (VC) worldwide. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on routine vaccinations of the pediatric population and to determine factors that are correlated with delayed vaccinations during a pandemic period. This was a retrospective study, where vaccinations, as well as their delays, were recorded, in children 0-18 years old, at a primary care center, during the COVID-19 pandemic (1/2020- 12/2021) compared tο the time period just before (1/2019-1/2020). For the assessment of the risk factors for delaying vaccinations, we collected questionnaires from the children’s parents. Using the electronic records of the patients that had been vaccinated at the health center we recorded the VC of children for all the vaccines which are included in the National Vaccination Program of Greece, as well as the delays of these vaccinations. Vaccination limits for on-time vaccinations were up to 1 month after the recommended age group administration, according to the National Vaccination Program. Additionally, the percentage of vaccinations for the flu and rotavirus vaccines were calculated. Afterwards, questionnaires were carried out with the causes for delaying vaccinations. We observed reduced VC in all the age groups during the months of the strict measures of the pandemic. A greater reduction was recorded during April 2020. After the lifting of these strict measures VC seemed to improve to pre-pandemic levels in the pediatric population of the health center in 2020, while in 2021 vaccination coverage was further reduced. From the questionnaire, the primary reason of vaccination postponement was due to fear of coronavirus exposure, however during questionnaire conduct a large number of children were still not fully vaccinated. Further studies are needed to detect the reasons for low vaccination rates.
