Abstract A substantial increase in the use of radiological procedures in pregnant patients has been observed over the last decades. Accidental or/ intentional medical exposure have caused increasing concerns regarding the biological effects of ionizing radiation on radiosensitive conceptus. Furthermore, occupational exposure of pregnant employees in fluoroscopically guided interventional procedures comprises a thorny issue. In these cases, the expectant mother has the right to know the level of the potential effect to the conceptus from a in-utero exposure. Therefore, determination of conceptus dose to pregnant patients undergoing radiological procedures and pregnant workers involved in fluoroscopically guided interventional procedures it is of paramount importance. The aim of the current study was to I) develop methods for the estimation of conceptus dose from a) computed tomography examinations and b) fluoroscopically guided interventional procedures undergoing pregnant patients and II) to provide normalized exposure data and scatter exposure maps (isodose curves) for estimation of effective dose of the exposed personnel and conceptus dose of pregnant employees involved in fluoroscopically guided interventional procedures. Methods and data produced herein allow for the reliable conceptus dose estimation either from computed tomography procedures and fluoroscopically guided procedures of pregnant patients, or from occupational exposure in fluoroscopically guided interventional procedures. The generated isodose curves may be proved a useful tool for the medical staff involved in fluoroscopically guided interventional procedures to optimize their routine clinical practice from the radiation protection point of view.
