Abstract This Master thesis investigates the Photodissociation Dynamics of small molecules in high energies (the Rydberg state regime). Three different molecular systems were analyzed containing one halogen atom: methyl iodine (CH3I), methyl bromide (CH3Br) and deuterium iodide (DI). The goal of these experiments was the extension of knowledge on high energy dynamics and more specifically the identification of the quantum states of the products and the active photo-dissociation channels from which they are produced. Based on these data, information on possible mechanisms for each reaction were extracted. Chapter I serves to provide a brief introduction of the theory and the experimental methods necessary for the understanding of the experiments described in the following chapters. Specifically, the reader is introduced to the field of Reaction Dynamics and the concept of photodissociation. Moreover, since the research focuses on high energy states, an outline of the molecular electronic states and the concept of the Rydberg states is presented. Finally, a detailed illustration of the Ion Imaging technique including the experimental apparatus and the image analysis is provided. In the second chapter, data from the study of photodissociation dynamics of CH3Br after excitation to selected Rydberg states using the Ion Imaging technique are presented and discussed. Images from the ion products and the respective photoelectrons after their ionization are analyzed after excitation to ten different states. For each state, the quantum states of the products are identified and potential dissociation channels and underlying dissociation mechanisms are suggested. In the third part of this thesis, the data from a similar study on the photodissociation dynamics of CH3I after excitation to selected Rydberg states are presented and analyzed. Ion and photoelectron images were recorded and the quantum states of the products are identified along with potential dissociation channels and the underlying dissociation mechanisms are suggested. In the end, the results are compared with the ones from CH3Br. In the last chapter, data from the DI photodissociation are presented as evidence that DI photo-dissociation at 270 nm with circularly polarized light can be used as a source of high nuclear spin polarized D atoms in number densities high enough for nuclear fusion reaction applications.
