Abstract According to the Global Observatory on Donation and Transplantation (GODT), more than 130,000 transplants are performed annually (of which only 212 in Greece during 2018), which satisfy only 10% of human organ needs. The rest are waiting for a life-saving transplant. Because of this shortage, an illegal human organ trade has flourished. Patients often travel abroad to buy illegally a life-saving graft from a stranger, a non-related, living donor. Donors usually come from the lower economic strata while usually the recipients belong to the upper class. Donors are usually forced to sell one of their body parts, in order to make ends meet or to pay a debt. What if the donors’ decision, to make such a bargain, was totally conscious and there was an informed consent? Is such an act morally justified if such a decision was taken freely and not under pressure and coercion? Do we eventually own ourselves? This paper is called upon to answer, taking into account the philosophical theories of utilitarianism and libertarianism, but ultimately it is fully in line with the Kantian perspective.
