Abstract The last decades high levels of anxiety are arising as one of the main problems of our societies. Furthermore that phenomenon can be due to non communicable diseases as Cardio Αtrial Disease (CAD) or due to hospitalization. It is known that measuring preoperative levels of anxiety combined with patient’s education can predict postoperative complications and act beneficial to patient’s life. The purpose of this research is to investigate preoperative levels of anxiety of cardio surgical patients in the cardio surgical unit (CSU) of PAGNI hospital. Its objectives are the formulation of proposals that will be related to the conclusions of the research and will contribute to the improvement of the provided health care. Material-Methods: For the assessment of preoperative anxiety a standardized questionnaire was used, The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory(STAI-X-1) by Spielberger. The research took place the period between October 2016 and March 2017 and 40 patients participated. Participation to the research was optional and patients were informed of this. The researcher interviewed the patients one day before surgery in the cardio surgical unit. Resultς: The mean value of Trait Rate was (TR)39,2± 9.9 and of Stait Trait was (ST)40,8± 12,5 while the mean value of STAI is (20+80)/2=50. Patients with no insurance seemed to have lower levers of TR=29,3±4,9 while patients with insurance had TR=40,3±9,7 (p=0,032). Postoperatively patients who stayed longer at the CSU seemed to have lower ST (p=0,037). Conclutions: At the preoperative period CAD is a main reason for high levels of anxiety (TR) that can be as stressful as anxiety caused by a CABG surgery (ST) while patients with no insurance are less stressed. At the postoperative period patients returning to the CSU from ICU are starting to feel relieved. Patient’s education and preoperatively assessment of anxiety can provide holistic health care.
