Abstract Political squats constitute a distinctive component within the squatting movement. They differ from other types of squatting mainly as to the fact that they aim to radically overcome the predominant capitalistic system, towards the creation of a libertarian and egalitarian model of social organization, based (among other principles) on selfmanagement. The subject of the present postgraduate thesis is firstly the interpretative permeation and apprehension of this squatting practice (which generally remains unfamiliar both in an academic and a broader social level), as it is embodied in the case of Evangelismos Squat in Heraklion of Crete, Greece; secondly, the investigation of the constituent elements of this venture’s political and more generally cultural background (values, visions and objectives, practices, codes of conduct and interaction, collective action etc); third, the examination of these elements’ capability of effecting the Squat’s aims and the extent to which they constitute an opponent to the hegemonic cultural model, especially in the social context of the current crisis’ adverse impacts at the level of Greece. For the achievement of this objective, a field research took place as part of a qualitative method for the approach of this specific case. During the research i carried out an overview of the relevant literature, proceeded with in-depth interviews i took from certain Squat’s members, examined evidence found in its archive and, finally, i collected additional clues through the process of participant observation. The research’s findings indicated that Evangelismos Squat bears an objective confrontational and transformative dynamics towards capitalism, as it is distinguished by values and implements practices that rival those of the latter. At the same time, the Squat is able to provide solutions to the urgent problems that the contemporary crisis brought on (or aggravated), mainly as an example of action. Nevertheless, it seriously limps along concerning the well-rounded and consistent implementation of its principles, so that, for the time being, their antisystemic content has only a potential dimension. Αn inclusive, strategically planned and therefore purposeful and substantial ferment with other struggling social groups and ventures, as well as a constant, collective reflection on its deficiencies so it will gradually get over them, are indispensable conditions for a truly subversive activation of the Squat’s possibilities.
