Abstract |
Patient satisfaction is an essential dimension in the delivery of healthcare
especially when we are trying to quantify the quality aspect of different models. This
assumption becomes more important if we take into account the changing pattern in
the healthcare market that considers patients as clients and consumers. It is therefore
essential to understand the way specific factors affect the satisfaction of patients.
However, current evidence suggests there is fragmented understanding of these
factors. The international and Greek bibliography has strongly emphasized the lack
of reliable and valid tools that can measure these factors. Press Ganey’s “Inpatient
Survey” questionnaire was selected through a bibliographical criterion search by
previous Regional Health System’s research team of Crete.
The translation and validation of the questionnaire was performed according to
the international standards (Mapi Research Institute, 2002). The translated
questionnaire was validated by a non-random convenience sample of adults (n= 57
number) who were admitted as inpatients in both the Surgical and Pathological
sectors of the “Saint George” General Hospital of Chania, Crete during a six (6) week
period in 2007 and completed by the patients who were admitted at that time of
period.
The translated version of the questionnaire was completed by the study
participants at the time of their discharge. In order to measure the internal
consistency of the questions, Chronbach’s Alpha was calculated and found that seven
(7) subscales out of ten (10) were >0.70; the questionnaire’s overall reliability was
found 0.82. Test-retest reliability was calculated using the intraclass correlation
coefficient and found between 0.83 - 0.95 for the individual questions and 0.90 for the
questionnaire in total. Factor analysis showed a structure that agrees with the original
version of the questionnaire and with previous findings. Our results indicate the
«Inpatient Survey» to be a reliable and valid tool for future use by the Greek
secondary care hospitals in the case of conducting systematic inpatient surveys.
