Abstract

The method of surrogate motherhood, from its outset until today, remains one of the most controversial methods of Medically Assisted Reproduction. One of the key issues that arise concerns the exploitation of women, who are involved in the process of surrogacy. Exploitation is linked to gender stereotypes, which, having been internalized by both men and women, indicate in both genders the roles they are expected to have in the social environment. In addition, exploitation of women's vulnerability results from class discrimination, as it is well known that surrogate mothers come from low socio-economic backgrounds. Women who accept surrogate contracts and agreements are used instrumentally to serve the needs of social parents and all those involved in the "surrogacy industry". Additionally, in commercial surrogate motherhood, the child is treated as a "product", which changes hands by offering an amount of money, thus marking a commercial transaction that contrasts with the fundamental duty of parents to, unconditionally, love and care for the child. Even the so-called altruistic surrogacy seems morally problematic because issues of exploitation and objectification of the surrogate mother and the child arise in this case too.
