Abstract |
This postgraduate paper focuses on determining what primary school teachers are aware of and implement in regard to writing skills and expository texts. More specifically, research was conducted on a) primary school teachers’ knowledge b) practices c) perception regarding writing skills and expository texts and the assessment of a teaching proposal-scenario so as to create a cause-and-effect expository text. This research lasted 2 months. The participants were practicing teachers who have been teaching elementary school kids (Grade 1-6) in various primary schools during the academic year 2020-2021. The method which was selected is a qualitative research and semi-structured interviews have been used. The findings of the research show that teachers are knowledgeable and implement a wide range of practices so as to enhance writing skills and expository texts in the course of their teaching. They agree on the significance of writing skills and the characteristics of text writing. Generally speaking, it has been ascertained that teachers implement common practices and techniques not only as writers themselves but also as educators while teaching writing skills during their lessons. It has even been noted that they spend about the same amount of teaching time in the classroom for writing texts. Concerning the types of texts, they mainly prefer other types of texts (narration, description) and less informative texts. In fact, teachers employ this type of texts without being aware of it. As regards the teaching proposal-teaching scenario for the creation of expository texts, which applies in the frame of cognitive apprenticeship, the findings show that teachers are acquainted with it and have a positive attitude towards it and, consequently, towards this teaching method. However, although it was accepted by the teachers, some objections have been voiced regarding the duration of implementation of the teaching proposal and the utilization of the educational material by the students. It was very important that the teachers agreed to use the teaching scenario in their classes or even attend educational seminars in order to gain more knowledge about it.
