Abstract The present research studies the influence of physical activity in mental well-being and parental self-efficacy of parents who have children at the age of 4-17 years old. The study sample was comprised of 32 physically active and 27 physically inactive Greek speaking parents from several areas, who responded to an invitation to fill in an e-questionnaire via internet. Mixed research study design was applied. The research tools used were: The Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale, the Parenting Sense of Competence scale, the Godin Leisure Time Exercise Questionnaire with two extra items added, and a semi-structured interview which was used for the collection of the parents’ opinion regarding the influence of physical activity. The results of the statistical analysis showed that the physically active parents have statistically significant higher scores of mental well-being and parental self-efficacy compared to physically inactive parents. Additionally, physically active parents tend to engage in joint physical activity with their children and encourage their children to engage in physical activity, more often than physically inactive parents do. Moreover, results from the qualitative analysis showed that all parents recognize the beneficial effects of physical activity on them and their children. They also acknowledge the benefits of joint physical activity. Finally, it appears that physical activity can relief parental tension, contributing thus to parental calmness, clear thinking, and dispassionate management of everyday situations.
