Abstract Optical fibers since their introduction have been a powerful platform for the development of photonic sensors and devices. Optical fiber sensors have been identified as a potential candidate for gas pressure sensing in various pressure regimes. The motivation of this thesis was the experimental investigation and development of pressure sensors based on microstructured optical fibers, with enhanced sensitivity. To achieve such an objective, tilted fiber Bragg gratings in microstructured optical fibers were utilized for gas pressure measurements. Different sensing probes were developed enabling direct and indirect pressure sensing, investigating a new transduction mechanism. The infiltration of the capillaries of a microstructured optical fiber with gaseous and liquid media, thus exploiting inherent microfluidic capabilities of the MOF, provided the basis for the enhancement of pressure sensitivity. The indirect pressure sensor probe developed, is the first, to the best of our knowledge, that is based on gas dissolution effects in organic liquids. Experimental investigation indicated the possibility of gas pressure measurements with improved sensitivity and new sensing functionalities.
