Abstract |
Introduction: Despite of the major importance of morbidity for health planning and
resource allocation, there are no recent estimates of the morbidity from neoplasms at a
Greek level. Those data that are available generally refer to the mid-1990s. The aim of
this study was to present epidemiological results relating to malignant neoplasms on
the prefecture of Rethymnon, Crete, 1999-2004. using primary data from Cancer
Registry of Crete.
Methods: The registration of neoplasms was population based on the prefecture of
Rethymnon. The data were collected from General Hospital of Rethymnon. Then, the
diagnosis coded through the international classification of diseases, 9th edition and
entered in the data of Cancer Registry of Crete. Furthermore, crude and standardised
incidence ratios were calculated for 5 years period. The patients was residents of
Rethymnon and was diagnosed during 1999-2004.
Results: The number of new cases for both sexes was 747. The most common
diagnosed malignant neoplasms are lung 106 cases, prostates 100 cases, colorectal 98
cases, bladder 87 cases and breast cancers 72 cases. The crude and the age

standardized incidence rates are bigger for men. Further, with the as larger is the age,
