Abstract |
The master thesis studies the island of Chios immediately after the Ottoman conquest in 1566. To this end, the main sources are the tax registers ΤD 363 and TD 366 (Τapu Τahrir Defterleri), which are located in the Ottoman Archives of the Prime Minister's Office in Istanbul. Both registers were compiled in 1566-67 (the first year after the Ottoman conquest) and -comparatively studied- offer information both about the island’s topography, demography, society and economy under the Genoese Justiniani and the administrative system applied by the Ottomans.
Thus, the research focuses on the study of the place and family names, the population, as well as the taxes imposed on the households in the city of Chios. Moreover, the topographic information is combined with mapping tools in order to represent the mid-16th century urban space of Chios and the neighborhoods (mahalleler) inside the fortress (kale) and the suburbs of the city (varoş).
Both registers, being the first tax registrations after the conquest, have a unique value as they offer the Ottoman perspective of space, a photograph of the city in that specific moment of its transition from the Genoese to the Ottoman rule.
