Abstract

Child abuse is a very serious social problem and misdeed, the causes of which are various. It has negative impacts on a child’s life and mental health outcomes. The disclosure of the abuse and the social reactions on it may have a negative effect on the mental health of the child. The present study evaluates the abuse, disclosure and social reactions roles in contrast on the affect of the people’s mental health. A quantitative research was conducted to investigate these roles, involving 120 students and teachers in the prefecture of Rethumnon. The results of the survey indicated that the negative outcomes of mental health (Anxiety Disorders, Depression, Trauma) does not correlate with the existence of experience of abuse during childhood. Contrariwise, the disclosure of at least one experience of abuse is directly related to the occurrence of depression in the victim’s adult life. Therefore, it is necessary the fully meaning of abuse and the importance and the necessity of disclosure to be understood by all people. The main concern for every society has to be the updating and education on abuse and neglect issues, in order to develop a framework of protection, assistance and prevention.
