Abstract

This is an attempt at studying collective action of precarious workers through the case of substitute teachers. Our purpose is to demonstrate the aspects of job precariousness in the case of Greek substitute teachers, as experienced by those who worked for ten or more years as teachers with temporary contracts. Also, we aim to study the factors affecting substitute teachers’ decision whether to take part or not in collective action. The study includes two main parts. In the first part, we attempt to recognise objective and subjective aspects of job precariousness. In the second part we attempt to present the role between trade unions and precarious workers. Particularly, we attempt to demonstrate substitute teachers’ incentives to participate in collective action, but also the deterrent factors that refrains them from organising around their trade unions. Finally, we search for possible correlations between job precariousness and collective action. Eight primary school teachers who have worked as substitute teachers for a long time participated in this qualitative research. The data was obtained through the use of semi-structured interviews by using purposive sampling. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the resulting data. Teachers shared with us a part of their lived experience and also their views and concerns regarding their working conditions, trade unions’ role and the importance of collective action. Data analysis showed that substitute teachers’ job includes different aspects of precariousness, both objective (e.g. financial difficulties) and subjective aspects (e.g. negative feelings). Moreover, data analysis revealed that individualistic incentives turn substitute teachers toward collective action. Also, through data analysis we highlighted the malfunctions of unionism in Greece which discourage precarious workers from organising around their unions. Finally, it was found that precarious workers are interested in collective action.
