Abstract |
The present paper is entitled "The interaction and the emotional and
behavioral well-being of siblings of persons with autism". It includes a
research which is examined the relationship of siblings of persons with
autism with their siblings, their involvement in intervention programs and
strategies, and their emotional and behavioral well-being. The sample is 47
adult or minor siblings (five years of age or older) who were identified by
random sampling from diagnosed cases of people with autism who have at
least one brother or sister in randomly selected Educational and Counseling
Support Centers (E.C.S.C.) of Greece. For the participation of the minor
siblings, their parents completed a responsible statement which was given
or sent by e-mail from them to the E.C.S.C.. The measuring tool used is a
questionnaire that was sent by mail or email to the E.C.S.C. and from the
E.C.S.C. to the participants and returned by each participant by hand or by
email to E.C.S.C. and from the E.C.S.C. to the researcher. The analyzes
used were mainly descriptive statistics, t-test and One Way ANOVA. The
key findings after analyzing the results are that: (a the overall percentage
of typical developing siblings participants in interaction and participation,
in sensitivity well-being and behavioral well-being, and the level of
behavioral well-being separately are relatively high. b) the degree of
interaction and participation is moderate, c) the level of sensitivity is low, d)
the gender of the autistic person and the gender of the typical developing
sibling in combination with the severity (functionality) of the disorder affect
the degree of interaction and participation and e) the sibling's age affects
the emotional well-being, as siblings 0-12 years old exhibit more desirable
behaviors than siblings at adolescence (13-17 years).
