Abstract This paper examines how art discourse in France during the eighteenth century was shaped by the relationship between discourse and image, a relationship codified through the iconic phrase from Horace's Poetics: Ut pictura poesis. The paper begins with a brief review of the origins and transformation of this phrase from a rhetorical figure in Horace to a theoretical principle by the Italian artist-theorists of the sixteenth century. It then examines its adoption as such by the French Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in the 17th century. Right after, the central theme of the paper is analysed, which concerns the gradual retreat of the concept during the 18th century in France, a retreat linked to the emergence of a sensorial approach to art in which emotion takes on a special significance. This shift is evident in the discourse on art both within and outside the academic environment. For this reason, the second part of the paper examines not only theoretical but also art critical texts of the period. This trajectory ends with the theoretical transcendence of the concept in 1766 by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, whose contribution to the debate has been interpreted mainly in the light of nineteenth-century nation-state theories, downplaying his relationship with the French tradition, a relationship that this paper attempts to highlight at its third and final part. Lessing's intervention is also the limit of the historical horizon of this paper not only because the discussion of ut pictura poesis is concluded, but mainly because the discourse on art as well as art itself in France before and after the Revolution changes its orientation.
