Abstract The present work examines the ability of the eukaryotic unicellular green alga Chlorella vulgaris to survive in conditions of total nutrient deficiency. The results prove that the microalga Chlorella vulgaris is able to survive and adapt effectively under extreme conditions of nutrient deficiency (cultivation in distilled water) for a long time. During the deficiency, the microalga adapts its energy and metabolic process to ensure its survival and the maintenance of its basic functions at very low rates. Specifically, a differentiation of the molecular structure and function of the photosynthetic mechanism is observed, resulting in a reduction in photosynthetic activity, which in combination with a drastic reduction in respiratory activity lead to a reduction of cellular metabolism (reduction of cellular carbohydrate and lipid levels) and therefore in growth inhibition. The minimum required energy of this microalgae survival strategy in a closed system could be gained by continuous photosynthesis-respiration feedback, starting with the "sacrifice" of small cellular organic stores that would increase CO2 which in turn will induce its photosynthetic binding and the replenishment of the organic reserves. When conditions return to a favorable environment (presence of inorganic or organic nutrients), the microalga immediately recovers its normal functions and increases its photosynthetic efficiency. This indicates that the microalga is able to function efficiently and survive under extreme conditions of complete nutrient deprivation, with the possibility of immediate functional regeneration when conditions improve. This microalgae strategy highlights it as an important biological model for biotechnological applications under extreme conditions, but also for astrobiological applications, such as its use in bioregenerative life support systems on other planets (BLSSs).
