Abstract Taking for granted the existence of an educational inequality, which has been proven by the many studies, the present paper attempts to give an answer as to how, why and through which processes this inequality accrues. We chose to study one of the many factors that contribute to this inequality, the language factor and that was not a random decision. Language was chosen due to the fact that it has a defining importance on the evaluation-grading of the students in school and it is a decisive factor on their school performance. Moreover, even though initially, there seems to be a neutral and unsuspicious connection between the language and the political function it turns out that there is a much more intense political dynamic since it is clearly about a political function through which occur the diversification and the integration of people in the social system. A dominant part in the placement of today’s students in the tomorrow’s social system plays their school performance which is mainly defined by their linguistic development and by the language code the children have adopted upon entering school. In this sense it is very important to study in practice if the children from lower social levels who study in the Greek schools are diversified from the children of the upper social levels. That is if the social surroundings affect the linguistic development of the children and create for them negative circumstances for their success in school or if there might not be a discrimination in the linguistic development between the children from lower social levels and those of upper levels thus resulting to all having the same linguistic starting point during their attendance at school. As a study tool was chosen a written essay produced by the children in which the parents’ profession was recorded and based on which occurred the distribution of the students in the social levels. The study was carried out in two school of the Lasithi Prefecture and one school from the Heraklion Prefecture, on fifth grade students of the Primary schools in December 2016. The research method that was chosen was the qualitative approach (method of content analysis) with some added quantitative approach facts. The examination of the essay was carried out in two parts. In the first part we examined the total number of the words per student, the repeated words, idioms, the use of abstract and concrete nouns, the use of adjectives and verbs as well as their syntax structure (main and subordinate sentences). In the second part we examined the socioeconomic level of the parents in relation to the linguistic level of the students. The results of this study come to confirm us the Bernstein theory since the students’ essays that come from different social levels present intense dissimilarities. More specifically the essays from the middle class level students were better spelled with more legible writing, richer vocabulary and better syntax than those coming from students from lower social levels. Consequently it is proven that language is the outcome of socioeconomic processes that are relevant to the class system which is at the same time a production system affecting any other production form such as the language production. Each social class forms its own language inside its surroundings resulting in being a means of capitalist production. In order to manage the existing educational dissimilarities and have an equal educational system to all, the educational process must be handled through the macro and micro sociological space. Things need to change is the individual social surroundings , as well as the structure of society, since each individual is an interactive being inside a given social environment and it is not adrift of macro social differences.
