Abstract Previous research has investigated the relationship between the family environment and the occurrence of emotional and behavioral disorders in children. However, different parameters of family functioning have been found to be associated with specific disorders, while there is a small number of surveys for the Greek population and especially for the school-age period. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between family functioning, as defined by the Circumplex Model of Marital and Family Systems, and emotional and behavioral disorders during school age. A total of 282 parents of school-aged children participated in the study, of which 227 women (80.5%) and 55 men (19.5%), with an average age of 40.98 years (TA.5.08 years). Participants completed questionnaires to assess family functioning (Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale- FACES-IV Package) and their children's emotional and behavioral disorders (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, SDQ-HEL). The results showed a statistically significant correlation of all dimensions of family functioning with the exception of rigidity with emotional and behavioral disorders. Relationships were tested for the effect of intervening variables, such as place of residence, number of children in the family, sex of the child, and the presence of mental illness in the parents. In addition, the aforementioned relationships were explored separately for boys and girls. According to the results, family functioning can be related to emotional and behavioral disorders during childhood, while differences were observed between the two sexes of children. The results of the present study show the role of family functioning as a factor that contributes both to the understanding of emotional and behavioral disorders in middle childhood and to the design and implementation of psychosocial interventions for the prevention and treatment of these disorders.
