Abstract |
The aim of this master's thesis was to study and analyze the levels of stress and burnout felt by parents having a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and also the contribution provided to them by the Greek State. The research follows a qualitative methodology and was implemented using the interview method for data collection. The sample of the research was a total of 8 mothers, who, answering through questions from different thematic sections, reported their personal experience and feelings from the diagnosis of their child's disorder, the thoughts they had in the first period when the diagnosis was made, the actions they took, later, to help both their child with ASD and themselves and their family, the impact the child's condition had on each of the members individually, as well as the degree and the way it affected the pandemic their family. In addition, they evaluated the upbringing and help they themselves offered to their child, the role of special educational staff and therapists who dealt with their child's interventions, the state aid provided to them and how much it has actually helped them. Finally, they expressed their feelings by thinking about the future of their child with ASD and present their own proposals and ideas to the Greek State for a better future for all children with special educational needs/disabilities. In the general average of the answers the mothers agreed on many questions with each other and in the data analysis the identification of their opinions and experiences was observed. From the findings of the research, it is clear that the state and the society in which they are, operate and interact play a catalytic role in facilitating or not the living of individuals who are on the autism spectrum and also of their families.
