Abstract The purpose of this thesis is the exploration of adolescents’ perspective on how they perceive the family language policy that is implemented in their family and how they respond to this. The research questions examine the language practices, the language ideologies and the language management of parents and children in the home domain. The study addresses to the Albanian immigrant group. Eight (8) families participated in the research. It is a case-study research that is based on qualitative methodology and it uses the tool of semi-structured interview. Distinct interviews with children and their parents were conducted. The findings show the active role of parents and children in the family. The concept of family is presented as a dynamic place where the family members interact and negotiate the bilingualism of each other and the family language policy. The family language policy of each family is shaped under the impact of several different internal and external factors. The language practices, the language ideologies and the language management vary between the different families. There are families in which Albanian language is the dominant, families in which Greek and Albanian coexist and families in which Greek is the dominant language in the family domain. As far as the language ideologies are concerned, the language ideologies of parents are generally in harmony with those of children. In one case it seems to exist the element of conflict between the language ideologies of parents and child. Important finding is the fact that although the dominance of Greek language in children’s language practices, except from family and Albanian adults, children also contribute to the maintenance of minority language. The role of peers and friends is also presenting as an encouraging factor in the language use of the minority language. Moreover, it seemed the agency of children in the process of literacy acquisition of Albanian and also in their attempt to reinforce their Albanian culture.
