Abstract |
Alcohol dependence is a multifactorial phenomenon, with a wide range of consequences, while the fact that alcohol consumption is legal, makes alcoholism a covert addiction. In addition, alcoholism effects on human health are grave and not limited to individually. They are also obvious to the person's wider environment, starting with the family. The factors that can push someone into alcohol abuse can be loneliness, excessive anxiety, and the overall dissatisfaction he receives from life. The problem of alcoholism is also being challenged by general hospitals who receive cases of alcohol abuse, but they also have to identify patients at risk of alcoholic disorders.
The purpose of this research is to investigate the enhancement of Life Satisfaction as well as to study the Level of Loneliness and Anxiety among people with moderate or severe Alcohol Disorder. The sample participated taken from the Alcoholic Clinic of PAGNI in Crete, and consisted from 40 persons. Three questionnaires were given to them, the Satisfaction of Life (SWLS), Loneliness Climax (UCLA) and the Spielberger Anxiety Questionnaire (STAI).
The data analysis took place using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA), with the Satisfaction of Life showing an improvement in the adjusted mean values (means affected by a covariance) of the sample, based on the score of the questionnaire, in conjunction to specific factors such as education, gender or marital status. It was also found that Loneliness levels show lower values by the end of the three-month program, regardless the gender, while the third questionnaire is divided to into two categories, the Stress as a Situation (State Anxiety) and Stress as Characteristic of Personality (Trait Anxiety). The first one showed that its prices were higher for the participants when they were counted three months after the program, while the second one was higher when entering the program.
