Abstract |
BACKGROUND: The optimal use of Out of hours primary care services (O.O.O P-C) remains a key issue for the health policy of many countries, many of which invest significant resources to meet the health needs of the population. At European Union level, the availability and access to O.O.H vary between Member States, while several models have been tested to cope with O.O.H P-C. The most organized and efficient O.O.H -PC models operate in Denmark and the Netherlands. In Greece, there is an effort to upgrade and modify Primary Health Care through the startup and operating of Local Health Units, the aim of which is to address urgent / non-regular incidents.
PURPOSE: The aim of this thesis is to examine the O.O.H services which were addressed to, by patients registered at the local health units. Age groups, cause of visit and further management have been studied
METHODS: Descriptive quantitative survey among a random sample of 523 people registered to Local Health Units of Chania. Data collected from 10/2018 to 04/2019.
RESULTS: Taken as a whole, 62% of the 523 respondents, addressed health services out of hours (324 respondents). Of all contacts, 66% were identified without chronic disease and 92% didn’t contact with their doctor. 77% of the respondents visited the Chania General Hospital, while the most frequent symptom was fever (37%). Most of the patients were not referred to another health department (70%) and only 13% of them were hospitalized.
CONCLUSION: A relatively large percentage of patients is addressed to O.O.H services, with simple symptomatology, which implies extra burden in the hospital emergency department. Further research is needed among a larger sample of population. Future efforts should focus on fostering PHC with O.O.H. services to ensure the health of all citizens.
