Alternative Title Adaptive detection and location of moving objects in image sequences
Creator Paragios, Nikos
Abstract Two important problems in motion analysis are addressed in this thesis. The detection of moving objects and their location. Indeed, complete motion detection is not equivalent to temporal change detection. Presence of motion usually causes three kinds of ``change regions'' to appear. They correspond to: (1) Covered background, (2) Uncoverd static background, (3) An overlap of two successive object projection. Moving objects can be located precisely by the use of these regions, where the union of (1) end (3) gives the object locations in second frame, while (2) and (3) in first frame. A statistical aproach is adopted to formulate each problem. For the first, the inter-frame difference is modelized as a mixture of Laplacian distributions, while a Gibbs random field is used for describing the label field. A new method to determine the regularization parameter is proposed, based on a voting technique. The solution of the second problem is based on the observation of two succesive frames alone. Using the results of moving objects detection an adaptive statistical model for the couple of image intensities is indentified. For both problems two different multi-scale algorithms are evaluated, while the labeling problem is solved using either ICM (Iterated Conditional Modes) or HCF (Highest Confidence First) algorithms. Experimental results on synthetic and real video sequences illustrate the efficiency of the proposed method.
