Title Μια Οντοκεντρική Προσέγγιση για την ανάπτυξη ενός Συστήματος Σχεδιασμού Ταξιδιών με Πολλαπλά Μέσα Μεταφοράς
Alternative Title An Object Oriented Approach for the development of a Multi-Modal Travel Planning System
Creator Raxenidis, Vassilis
Abstract One of the major problems that are faced by travelers using public transport systems is the lack of adequate knowledge of the offered transport services. Moreover, the combination of different transport services in one single trip is a very complicated procedure. This work deals with the design and implementation of an information system that acts in an auxiliary way toward the completion of a travel planning procedure for travelers using public transport. The goal of the project has been to develop a system capable of combining different transport services to be used in a single trip, in a way that the passenger's preferences and requirements are satisfied as much as possible. For the achievement of the above goal, object oriented design techniques and graph theory has being used in order to develop a hierarchical representational model for multi-modal transportation networks. The development of this model is based on the physical characteristics and properties both of the transportation networks and the geographic areas served by them. In addition, an algorithm for performing path finding on transportation networks is presented. The hierarchical representation of the transportation network and the passenger's preferences are both used as a set of search criteria and as a mechanism for reducing the algorithm's complexity. Finally, an architecture based on autonomous software agents is proposed as the implementation platform for the system. The above architecture defines a framework for the efficient implementation of the path-finding algorithm, permitting the concurrent execution of autonomous processes and using intelligent methods to manage information in transportation networks.
