Abstract The major aim of this study was to characterize the bacterial community on airborne dust from Sahara desert using New Generation Sequencing technologies. Apart from the characterization of the bacterial community, in this study we tried to identify all the bacterial genus which could potentially be a threat to human health. New technologies are chosen because they offer greater performance, detail, discretion and greater speed. This is the first study in Greece where bacterial diversity is characterized by the use of omic technologies. The sampling process started in 2013, when the first samples were taken and continued until 2014. The total number of samples was 22 and were divided into samples where the phenomenon was at its edge and in samples that were the phenomenon did not exist in order to be able to compare and to separate the bacterial diversity between the two periods. The sampling took place at the Laboratory of Chemical Environmental Processes by Mr. Iakovidis. Subsequently the samples were transferred to the Molecular Biology Laboratory of the University of Patras where the procedure for the characterization of bacterial communities took place. The first step in the process was the isolation of the DNA that was carried out with the MOBIO DNA Isolation kit. Subsequently, after assessing the quantity and purity of the genetic material, its amplification began. The required amount needed to study the sample is 300 ng of genetic material. After the end of the genetic amplification process, purification and final quantitation took place. The final stage of the experimental process took place at IMGM S.A, where the final sequencing took place. The Qiime packet software was used to analyze the data. Finally for statistical analysis and virtual presentation of the data analyzed programs Past 3, Primer 7 and Excel were used.
