Abstract

The Syrian crisis was the starting point for the largest violent population movement in the 21st century. Greece was the gateway to refugee flows from the Middle East and become a host country of millions of refugees. In this way the refugee issue has been set on new terms in our country and the needs in an economic crisis and austerity environment have been multiplied. War, emigration and resettlement in a new cultural environment affect in various ways the refugee health creating specific challenges for the health care of these people. Primary Health Care is called out to play a determinant role through an accessible biopsychosocial model of health benefits on a community level and the health needs detection of this particular population. The health needs assessment of the refugees on a Primary Health Care level will be grounded on the social access which focuses on the human being, emphasizing on the social conditions he lives in. Taking into consideration this anthropocentric view?? a qualitative research was used by the focus group and the semi-structured interviews which took place in the Primary Health Care Unit which was assigned the care of all refugees who have arrived in the city from zones at war. The object of this research is to investigate disease issues connected to war through all the stages of emigration and to trace the health needs in a new cultural environment in Heraklion Crete. Not only the factors which have a positive or negative impact on their health will be explored through the individual speeches but the social experience of the state of war and its effects on the health and the refugee psychosocial condition will be highlighted as well. The ultimate goal of this research is to develop concerns and also to make suggestions on a community based Primary Health Care model for refugees from warring zones. The research findings reveal that refugees seem to suffer mostly from mental health issues which in some cases develop as physical diseases. These problems have been created during various stages of their emigration while their health seems to be improved when they find themselves in a community environment where their essential health needs are covered and refugees feel that they are socially acceptable. The fulfilment of refugees' essential needs, the easy free access to medical care, the respect to their cultural individuality, the effort to reassure autonomy and their social participation in local society, is of great importance to their health. As they themselves describe learning the Greek language, participating in social activities, being able to find a job, keeping out of ghettoization, racism and social exclusion seem to have a positive impact on their health. Gender issues and discrimination are important factors that affect healthy living conditions of this specific population. The domination of patriarchal perceptions restricts the woman's part in the home space and restrains female autonomy and independence. The post- colonialism, the globalization, the disrespect of the human rights in the Middle East countries seem to form the causes that have created the refugee flows, making the problem solution from the global community urgent. The health not only of refugees but of all human beings has to be described in a complex biopsychosocial frame as far as social processes such as the war, emigration and social incorporation procedure have an effect on human existence and play a crucial part in his health.
