Abstract Self-identity, forming a major concept in addiction, has led to a plethora of research, suggesting that its reconstruction is an important feature of “successful” therapy. The treatise in hand, aims towards understanding the ways in which individuals, who are participating in a social rehabilitation program, vindicate their decision to enter therapy (turning points) and narratively claim their identity. Τhe study design consisted of 4 biographical narrative interviews, while the process of data analysis was informed methodologically by the principles of Riessman(1993, 2008). According to present findings, the decision to enter treatment is constructed as a conscious, individual process, based on rational/ subjective free will, which was facilitated both by the presence of a supportive social network and the participants’ ability to access treatment. Furthermore, whilst engaging in new living practices and reappraisal of relationships underline the crucial role social networks and relationships play in the process of forming a recovery identity, management of internalized stigma and negotiation of power/control topics indicate difficulties in assimilating the drug using past to present-day goals and future plans, while planning ahead towards reintegration.
