Abstract

This study is an attempt to capture the aspects of social and cultural contexts in relation to tissue and organ donation and voluntary blood donation in the area of Rethymnon, Crete. This effort is carried out through the volunteer blood donors' speech and the way in which they themselves define the act of their donation, and what incentives or factors impel them into this social behavior. In addition, their views about tissue and organ donation, which is "the next step following voluntary blood donation". Finally, an effort is made to highlight whether volunteer blood donors have been involved in other voluntary actions and practices, and whether volunteering is something they claim to associate with other social groups. Therefore, the key question addressed in this study is how volunteer blood donors interpret the act of voluntary blood donation and their views on tissue and organ donation. In an intermediate space, we find elements of social representations and policies that define the aspects of their behavior and encourage them to shift positively or even negatively to the issue of life gifts: organ and voluntary blood donation. In addition, another question that concerns us is whether volunteer blood donor activity is combined with a general voluntary attitude that can also take place in other areas of social life. This is a qualitative, flexible-looking research, in which testimonies were gathered through ten (10) semi-structured interviews with the help of purposive sampling. The thematic analysis was used to analyze the resulting data. The testimonials of our volunteer blood donors carry a part of their experience with organ and voluntary blood donation and describe their views, thoughts and concerns about the gifts of life: organs and blood. Finally, we highlight some future research suggestions about re-funding the issue of organ and blood donation within the Greek society.
