Abstract Environment and health may not seem to be related, but they are linked by a very strong relationship. Environmental factors can cause significant damage not only to the ecosystem but also to the human body, and even mortality. Knowledge of these factors is important for both health professionals and users of health services to develop awareness of reports and potential symptoms, and on the greater need for prevention and better health promotion. The purpose of this thesis is a first assessment of the literacy of both health professionals and health service users in relation to widespread pollutants. In more detail, the ability to inform and present environmental problems and their effects, the ability to perceive disease caused by environmental causes, the level of knowledge regarding the relationship between environment and health and the level of communication between doctors and patients were examined. The data collection was conducted during May 2020-September 2020. The sample consists of 111 respondents, 35 professionals and 76 users of health services, coming from the two major health units of the Prefecture of Heraklion, two health centers, private clinics and the general population. The questionnaire used consists of four sections, health information search and doctor-patient communication, health literacy based on the HLS EU Q47 questionnaire, environmental reports and environmental perceptions on health issues. The results showed correlations with gender, age, specialty and literacy rate. No correlation was found between the literacy rate and the environmental knowledge score. It was found that the index of communication between doctor and patient is relatively low, as well as the index of doctors' interest in the health information that their patients seek. In addition, the self-assessment rates of the respondents are mainly positive. The average health literacy rate of the respondents is sufficient, while the average environmental skills score is basic.
