Abstract This thesis is a retrospective study of the history of tuberculosis and the struggle for its treatment in Greece, especially in Crete, during the last century when tuberculosis was one of the main causes of death in the country. The fundamental sociopolitical changes which occurred in Greece at the time of scientific and social development changed the picture and treatment of tuberculosis in the western world. As a result, the development in the understanding of the pathophysiology of the illness is slightly slow to be integrated as compared to that in the rest of Europe. The antituberculosis campaign in Crete follows the Greek fight for freedom against the Ottomans and the creation of the new Greek State and society of its citizens, whose stabilization will take nearly one century to take its present form. The sanatoria constituted the basis of the treatment of tuberculosis and the peak of the anti-tuberculosis campaign at the beginning of the twentieth century. They were places where the tuberculous were treated to be cured from the illness and they were also isolated as a measure of protection of the healthy people. The number of Sanatoria in Greece was limited and due to the high cost of hospitalization they were inaccessible for people of low means. Those were the reasons that led to the beginning of the Greek anti-tuberculosis struggle at the dawn of the 20th century. The procedure followed regarded the adoption of specific laws, the foundation of state sanatoria and specialized surgeries in the continuously changing conditions in Greece, especially in Crete, having from that time onwards the essential assistance and active cooperation of the newly created State. The core of the anti-tuberculosis campaign was the assistance of the State in treatment issues and social security of the tuberculous by establishing relevant laws. The contribution of charity organizations and wealthy people were proven equally important regarding the enhancement and contribution of the sanatorium treatment and medical equipment, meals, offers of food to the sick and their relatives at home. Structurally this thesis is divided into three parts. Firstly, is presented a brief description of the historical course of tuberculosis up to the current times and then are mentioned the most significant steps taken in the health sector of the newly created Greek State in the nineteenth century and the conditions prevailing in Greece the twentieth century. The wars, the rapid increase of the population due to the expansion of the border of the Greek territory and the influx of refugees, as well as the urbanization along with the insufficient health conditions in the cities caused a peak of illnesses and epidemics. Besides this is the reason why at the dawn of the twentieth century it occurs a big anti tuberculosis campaign, first in Athens and then all over Greece, as the health sector in Greece at that time has serious deficiencies. Moreover, it is analyzed the meaning of the basic question of this diploma thesis, that is the treatment of the illness in Crete in the twentieth century, before and after the union of the island with Greece. The issue of the efforts which were made for the sanitary reconstruction of the island and the treatment of contagious illnesses in the era of the Cretan State and the treatment of tuberculosis in particular after the union of Crete with Greece and until the end of the twentieth century are also mentioned here. Finally, it follows a summary of the general issues examined in the main subject, the limitations of this study, the recommendations for the future and the list of references used for the writing of this thesis.
