Abstract |
The aim of this research was the rational design of cheese-whey based media for
Chlorella biomass production, following up previous research work of our research group.
The experiments focused on the elimination of unnecessary pretreatment steps, as well as
improvement of the biomass production yield.
Previous studies of our research group have shown that microalgae of the Chlorella
genus can be grown in whey-based media with the simple addition of trace elements. Given
that milk (and consequently whey) contains some trace metals, the addition of trace metals in
various combinations was studied, in order to find the essential elements that are not present
in whey. Furthermore, the effect of the initial cell concentration on the growth of Chlorella in
primary and secondary cheese whey was studied. An advantage of the developed
methodology is that this microalga is able to achieve growth in whey, even at very low initial
cell concentration levels. In order to improve growth rates and biomass production yields, the
effect of increasing the initial microalgal cell concentration was studied as well.
Our results have shown that the addition of both ferrous and manganese (II) ions is the
minimum requirement for the growth of Chlorella cells in cheese whey. In addition, cells
grown in culture media based on primary cheese whey exhibited higher growth compared to
the respective ones in secondary cheese whey. Increasing the initial cell concentration resulted
in pronounced growth rates, but the final biomass produced remained the same. The results of
this thesis showed that the optimization of our methodology was achieved, and these findings
can be a tool to reduce the cost of large-scale applications.
