Abstract

Rapid advances in the fields of technoscience and medicine, the revolution in the field of informatics and their application, raise indisputable questions about the limits of human action. Research on biological material samples of rational subjects, kept in biobanks, raises, in turn, a multitude of questions that fall within the range of ethical evaluation of persons and that of freedom of research. At the same time, the pioneers in this field aspire to use the findings of the aforementioned studies in order to approximate the so-called “personalized medicine”. However, the burning issue, lies in a trade-off between the ability of human beings to design their lives unhindered and the creation of safe ground for the preservation of public health. Perhaps for some the success of biobanks depends on public confidence, while for others the burning concupiscence for people to exceed themselves, to accost immorality, as Sandel aptly find out, we live in a world where “science moves faster than moral understanding”. However, in the end the moral limit is where the basic principles of freedom, equality, justice and dignity are at stake.
